So, for those of you that have been keeping up with this forum for these past couple of months, you’ll know that it has undergone a number of changes, namely with the sub domain (forum.geteso.org) in favor of using the homepage to provide support/downloads for the forum software.

esoBB/geteso.org has always been a side project of mine. I don’t profit off the site and this community is one that I have a personal connection with. A few of the old users may not like me based off my reputation, but I’ve always been up front with them and have tried my best in order to listen to the general public when making decisions that will impact their use of the forum.

I recently made several changes to the base code of the forum (esoBB) with improvements to the security and compatibility of the forum software with newer versions of PHP, including a number of bug fixes that should make things run more smoothly. This forum has not yet been updated to the latest release of esoBB, which will be known as 1.0.0 delta 2.

This gives me the opportunity to not only update the forum but poll the few users that are currently posting here in order to understand where you guys want to see this forum go from here. I can do several things with the forum other than leave it as it currently is, and of course I want to see it grow so I’m wanting to choose the most desirable option.

I can take the backup of older users with their conversations and posts (which I still have) and effectively combine it with this forum by merging all the data in a way that does not lead to duplicates. One of the changes I made this past month is that I rewrote all the password hashing functions to use bcrypt, the standard for hashing passwords, and I can “double hash” what I already have in order to prevent everyone from having to reset their password. This will turn in the forum into much like what it once was: a large forum with conversations dating back to longer than 4 years ago while still keeping everything that’s been posted, posted.

Another option for me is to continue with this ‘reset’ of the forum and work in order to grow it as it currently is, while still pushing all the updates I have discussed.

Let me know what you guys think, and don’t afraid to be critical if you do choose to reply because there is no other way for these issues to be resolved if not for some form of discussion about it.

Seeing the whole 4 years of Geteso in full glory would be awesome. I'm not registered for very long so I will remain ambivalent about merging the new and old accounts.

However, having the old posts at least stored in a visible archive would be a great addition. Being able to partake in the long gone conversations would be the cherry on top. I think there might be a lot of lore that's worth to research.

So, I have done pretty much everything that was discussed in the post. I'll create a separate convo to discuss all of the changes. "New" accounts (the ones created after a separate database was made, aka the support forum) should be able to log in with old ones alike. The only accounts that can't log in right now are ones that are rather old, or last used before we eliminated the use of a global salt, but I will soon make their use possible as well.

I would love to see old conversations be revived! That being said, please don't necrobump old threads. :)

Very nice. I'll respect your wish.

Speaking of the future of this forum: Are there any rules? I can't really find to what's forbidden or can earn you a ban. Minimum age requirement? A warning that users may find explicit content? Stuff like that.

There are rules but they are very simple and the only 'rules' that do not consist of 'do not break the law' are: don't post porn, degenerate content, and stuff like that. I remember there only being like 5 rules. Anyways, there's a rules page but it just hasn't been added back yet. I will add the about/rules page back to the forum soon and thanks for reminding me because I actually forgot about it.
